Astronomy Day 2001 is 4/7/01
Our club president wrote this report on Astronomy Day: On Saturday, April 7, the Kentucky Highlands Museum sponsored their first Astronomy Day in conjunction with the Russell Middle School astronomy club and the Ohio Valley Astronomical Society. OVAS was well represented by Don Kemper, Tom Wilson, Larry Oyster, Tim Lester, Becky Breaux, Jeffery Breaux, Rodger Blake, Bill Evans, Ed Pramik, Joan Pramik, and Nicole Pramik. The scopes included the 10" cave, the 8" orange tube, a 1970's vintage 2" Sears refractor, and 6" dob. Two pair of binoculars with one on Bill's mount. The overall event was well organized. Starlab presentations were made as the crowd wished, and Tom explained how to complete variable star observations. Don was excellent the general public, explaining the role of OVAS and explaining astronomy basics to everyone. Exhibits included photographs by Jeff Ball, and a variety of posters. Videos ran continuosly in a separate part of the museum. One of the favorite exhibits was the air launch rockets. Almost every kid tried to hit the ceiling. (Chris Oyster has some nice bruises from trying it so many times.) Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. The cloudy skies prevented solar viewing, and there were no plans for an evening gaze. Rumour has it, the plans for next year will call for night time viewing. As a first time event, it was certainly a success. Coverage by both newspaper and Channel 13 News validated the event. Rebecca Breaux is to be commended for all her time and efforts in the coordination of the event. Give her a pat on the back the next time you see her.
Rebecca and Jeffery Breaux get a big OVAS thank you for organising our club’s participation in this event.
Featured events included: Starlab, Talks regarding general astronomy, variable stars, lunar observation and telescopes, video’s on astronomy, and scope demonstrations by club members.
