The club usually meets on the THIRD SATURDAY of the Month in the Physics classroom (room number G-113) at Huntington High School (5 PM winter or 7 PM summer) - check the Meeting Information page to be sure.
From I-64 take the Hal Greer Blvd. exit. If you are coming East on I-64 you will want to turn right from the exit, if you are coming west on I-64 you will turn left from the exit. Go south on route 10 (away from Huntington) to the traffic light. There is a Huntington High School sign on left at the entrance road to the high school. Make a left at the light and go up that road. You will need to stop at the guardhouse. Tell the guard that you are going to the Astronomy club meeting. Drive past the student parking lot and turn left. Drive past the main entrance to the school (follow the road until you reach the far side of the school). After you drive past the end of the school turn left to enter the faculty lot. OVAS may park in the faculty lot. Drive straight ahead towards the greenhouse. Go in the door to the right of the greenhouse. Go up the stairs, take a right at the top of the stairs. Walk down the hall. The corridor eventually turns to the left. G-113 is the first door on your right . If you’re interested, just come to a meeting. If you decide to join, the dues are $15 a year.
The club conducts regular public star gazes at the Donald
C. Martin Observatory on the SECOND SATURDAY of every month immediately
following the OVAS meeting – at about 1.5-2.0 hours after the start of the
meeting say 9:00 PM, except when its cloudy or raining or snowing (which happens
a lot). The general public is encouraged to attend both the meeting and the
public star gaze. The observatory is located on the right hand side of the road
that leads up to Huntington High, about ¾ of the way to the school.
Directions to Dark Sky Sites
Directions to the Indian Mound site
1. Take US 52 North
2. Exit onto Route 93, go North (left at bottom of ramp)
3. Go 5 miles (I think this is more like 7.4 miles; you go past Wayne National
Forest Office (?1.4 miles past); I need to check this.)
4. Turn right onto Lawrence County Route 4. (Look for a sign that says "Horse
Trail Head" on the left just before the turn)
5. Go 5 miles to top of hill and turn right onto Lawrence County Route 16. (This
road goes down a slight slope. The horse trail head is at mile mark 4.9 from the
last turn, so the turn is just 0.1 miles past the trail head)
6. Go about 1.7 miles (it is closer to 1.65 miles), this is O.2 miles past a red
barn that you pass. Look for a mail box and a telephone pole next to a gravel
road with a stop sign and that is where you turn. Turn right onto the gravel
road.
7. Drive 1.1 miles to the site. This is at a fork in the road. The "main road"
is the right fork we usually pull off on the left fork, park and set up. In the
future, once we get a brush hog, we may observe further down this fork.

Directions for Carter Caves
Take I-64 west from Huntington to the Carter Caves Exit. Follow the signs to the Park. In the Park follow the signs to the lodge. We meet there. Please note that the Lodge is further in the park then the welcome center – don’t be like me and stop at the welcome center by mistake.
