Observing report for 4/28/01

from driveway. 10:30 a.m.

Equipment: C-8 on Losmandy GM-8, full aperture Type II solar filter, solar prominence filter. Eyepieces: Tele-Vue 55 mm, Pentax 14, Nagler 9 mm.

Received the JMI motofocuser yesterday so wanted to give it a whirl. I read the instructions last night, and it looked simple. Attachment to the rear of the C-8 was a snap. The whole device is easy on/easy off. Three set hex screws are used to hold it in place. 1 1/4" and 2" eyepieces fit in the focuser. It came with both nylon and metal screws, but said the metal screws will hold equipment tighter.

The power cord for the mount is not working, so had to work around that. (At least I hope it is the power cord.) Used the solar filter with the 55 mm to try things out. Focus was quite easy. Rough adjustment is made the normal way, then the motofocuser is used for fine tuning. It has a range of a little over 1 cm or about a 1/2 inch. I suspected the greater the magnification, the more effective the motofocus would be. Put the 14 mm in and refocused manually to the best I could get it. When the scope settled it was obvious I was slightly out of focus. The motofocus now really started to strut its stuff. But the really big step was with the 9mm. I have thought the 9mm at 220X was about the greatest magnification I could get out of this scope. It seemed I could never quite get to focus. But with the motofocus, it was almost easy.

I have to remember the mount was not working, so if there is any vibration from that it won't show up until the power problem is fixed. All in all I am more than pleased with this device. It is very easy to use, and useful. I did have to add a second counterweight to balance the scope, but it didn't seem to be too much. Although it didn't say it anywhere, the focuser must weigh over a pound. It is way heavier than any of my eyepieces.

BTW, I counted five major families, with at least 6 major sunspots, and almost 20 smaller spots. Without the mount to scan the edge of the sun, it was difficult to look for prominences, although I do think there was some activity on the limb of the sun nearest the largest groups. I'm looking forward to trying this out with everything working, and at night.
