City Viewing
Hi Boys, I am trying to send this as a new group. I am calling this group the Dark Sky Boys - sounds like an old west
gang. Please let me know if you get this report. Well, after working all evening until 10:00 PM and rushing around
trying to get everything ready to close - nothing was going right - we finally got home about 11:20 PM, put telescope
on the front porch to cool, had to walk and feed the dog, she really likes the cool evenings and she just took her
good old sweet time. Oh well, the scope isn't cool yet anyway. After an eternity (about 12:30) I am finally able to take
the scope into the side yard so the house can shield me somewhat from only 9 - yes I said nine!! street lights within 1
block of our house. It's a little bit bright out here. I wanted to see M65,M66 in Leo since I have never seen them at all.
First try, no luck. Moved over to M57 to check to see how difficult it is. No problem, a little dim but there it is. Back to
Leo for about 20 minutes, no luck. Moved over to Virgo and started scanning for galaxies, found them, I still don't
know which ones they are, just nice, not to dim. Back to Leo for another 15 minutes of star hopping around M65,66
still no luck. Over to Ursa Major, M51 is very, I mean very dim, but there. M81 and M82 no problem very nice. Back to
Leo for another 45 minutes, Yeah you got it - no luck. Very frustrating. Decided to come in since I was getting seasick
after all that surfing. Never had that before. Still not to bad for just a 10", that isn't collimated very good and at home
with those 9 (can you believe it 9!!!) pesky streetlights. If I can actually see some galaxies from my yard they can't be
too hard to see. Here is hoping for a power outage in Ironton so I can see a little bit more. Hope you guys had better
luck that I did. After working all day I must get to bed. Maybe I'll see M65 and M66 in my dreams, since I couldn't
find them. I know that they are viewable from my yard, if I could only find them. Oh well, so long, happy trails,
moving along, or whatever. Hey Rodger, maybe you should have an observing buddy like I do ( my dog, best friend,
Sunni). She has a way of keeping our yard free of vermin, like skunks. I could arrange a loan of her services if you
want. You know, with all those street lights, if I drop my glasses I don't have any problems finding them. City viewing
does have its advantages. Tim Lester
